Keeping Your Artistic Vision Alive Without Starving: Balancing creative and commercial work in today’s marketplace.
Starting your own creative company (or working as a freelance artist) can be an incredibly exciting experience, but the freedom it affords comes with a price–you are essentially responsible for your own fate in the marketplace of ideas, and have to answer to the most discerning boss of all–yourself. One of the greatest challenges to face in the process is finding an appropriate balance between your creative vision and the work you do to pay the bills. For most artists, an ideal situation is one in which you are paid well to create work that fulfills your creative vision, but oftentimes financial necessity, client’s expectations and other factors can come into conflict with this.
Our workshop at Open The Portal seeks to directly address the creative/commercial balance by sharing our experiences, peaks, and pitfalls as a new studio navigating the world of commercial work. We will discuss both aspects of our work individually, open the workshop for questions, and give a studio tour followed by a BBQ for anyone who would like to stay after the workshop.
